Quite simply,  they are signs manufactured from material that absorbs light,  whether this be natural or artificial light - and when there is sudden darkness ie. a power cut - the signs 'glow' in the dark for a limited period.

Custom made photoluminescent signs in rigid plastic or self-adhesive vinyl also available.
